The Resiliency Project

Resilience is our ability to bounce back from the stresses of life. It’s not about avoiding the stress, but learning to thrive within the stress.

re·sil·ience (noun) - the ability of people or things to recover quickly, return to its original shape, after something unpleasant or difficult (Oxford English Dictionary)

The college experience comes with its fair share of difficulties and challenges. Even in a supportive environment like the University of South Carolina, some students seem to thrive, while others struggle to bounce back. Research has found that the biggest predictors of thriving at the end of the first year of college are self-compassion and level of connection the student develops with their campus community.

In 2019, Student Health Services administered the National College Health Assessment III. This study measure students on a variety of dimensions including well-being, belonging, loneliness, mental health, food security, substance use and resilience. We found that 42.7% of respondents screen positive for loneliness. When asked if they tend to bounce back after illness, injury or other hardships, 28% of respondents indicated that this was only sometimes true, rarely true or not true at all.

Thus, the Resiliency Project was born.
