Start an Organization

With over 600 student organizations on campus, there's still plenty of space for others! Starting a new organization takes some effort - but it’s a fun, meaningful way to build community, develop leadership skills, and bring your passions to life. We’re here to support you every step of the way!

Understanding Requirements

Congratulations on taking the next step in building community on campus! Starting a student organization is an exciting opportunity to create a space where students can connect, share interests, and make a lasting impact at USC. Whether you’re filling a gap, celebrating a passion, or launching something totally new, we’re here to help you bring your vision to life. Let’s get started!

First, be sure to visit the Requirements & Renewal and Resources and Guides page in the Organization Toolbox. There, you will find the Starting a New Organization handbook. As a student organization leader, it’s important to understand the expectations that come with starting and sustaining a recognized organization on campus. Once you're familiar with the requirements for all student organizations at USC (and confident you can complete them each year), you’re ready to take the next step!

Registering an Organization

Step 1: Complete Intent Form

The intent form for the 2025-2026 academic year will be available from July 21st, 2025 - April 27th, 2026. Completing this form helps us learn more about the organization you want to start on campus and ensures that we send you the most useful resource guide. Please note that only students at the University of South Carolina can start a student organization.

Step 2: Follow the Resource Guide (emailed to you)

After you submit your Intent Form you will recieve the Resource Guide and Constitution Guide. Review these guides as they will help you through the process and provide you with important information about next steps, including submitting the Organization Application.

Step 3: Submit Organization Application

Within the Resource Guide, you will recieve the link to submit your Organization Application through Garnet Gate. The application will ask you to include information about your organization, roster (minimun of seven with two officers), and profile picture. During the process you will complete training modules.

Step 4: Monitor the Application

To help your organization get registered as quickly and smoothly as possible, be sure to keep an eye on your email for any follow-up questions or additional information needed to complete your registration.

Step 5: Ensure All Members Join on Garnet Gate

All organization members will need to accept their membership request (via email) to be included on the roster and approved for space reservation access. Please ensure members respond quickly to allow for an efficient process.
