USC Salkehatchie Honors Academic Excellence and Donor Generosity at Scholarship Banquet

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie campus celebrated the academic accomplishments of its students and the generosity of its donors at the annual Scholarship Banquet on Tuesday, October 22. A total of 183 scholarships, valued at over $207,000, were awarded to 128 deserving students.

USC Salkehatchie Receives $1.9 Million DOE Grant to Boost STEM Education in Rural Communities

- The United States Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) has awarded the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie a $1.9 million grant to support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in the Salkehatchie region.

Miller named associate dean for USC Salkehatchie

Dr. Sarah Miller has been named associate dean for academic and student affairs for the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie. Miller joined USC Salkehatchie in 2006 as an assistant professor of history with promotion to full professor in 2018 and has been an active part of the Salkehatchie campus and its communities.

Leadership Salkehatchie celebrates class of 2024, alumni

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie celebrated the accomplishments of the Leadership Salkehatchie class of 2024 and alumni of the program at a reception held at the Walterboro Wildlife Center on June 27.

Leadership Salkehatchie meets with legislators in D.C.

The 2024 cohort of Leadership Salkehatchie spent its final session meeting with legislators in Washington, D.C. Shelby Broomfield, director of the USC Salkehatchie Leadership Institute, says the trip provided a chance for participants to reflect on topics discussed and lessons learned throughout the program.

Miller receives DAR National Excellence in Historic Preservation Medal

Dr. Sarah Miller received the DAR National Excellence in Historic Preservation Medal during a luncheon hosted by the Colonel Joseph Glover Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on May 15. The award recognizes a person who has done extraordinary work over a long period of time in establishing a historic district, preserving a local landmark, restoring or preserving objects of historic cultural significance, or establishing or participating in oral history projects, youth leadership and education at the regional, state, and/or national level. Additionally, Bill Young, Mayor of Walterboro, proclaimed May 15 as Dr. Sarah Miller Day and presented her with a resolution from the City of Walterboro commending her on receiving this honor.

USC Salkehatchie celebrates commencement

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie celebrated its 52nd commencement at its Allendale campus on April 26. The University awarded 135 degrees including 116 associate degrees and 19 bachelor's degrees, which were presented through the University of South Carolina's Palmetto College and in partnership with other USC campuses. The graduates represented 4 states, 52 cities and included 21 high school students. One graduate maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while earning her degree.

Salk wins Region 10 Championship, heads to national tournament

The USC Salkehatchie men's basketball team capped a run through the Region 10 Tournament with a 69-58 victory over regular-season champion Caldwell Tech. The win earned the team a trip to the 32-team NJCAA national tournament in Hutchinson, K.S where they will face Hutchinson in the first round.

Fall 2023 President's and Dean's Lists Announced

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie is proud to recognize 94 of its exceptional students for achieving the honor of President's List or Dean's List for the Fall 2023 term. To qualify for the President's List, students must earn a 4.0 GPA in all coursework attempted. To qualify for the Dean's list, a student must earn at least a 3.5 GPA in all coursework attempted.

2024 Leadership Salkehatchie class announced

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie Leadership Institute has announced the 19 participants of its 2024 Leadership Salkehatchie class. This prestigious, regional leadership development program is offered by USC Salkehatchie and sponsored by the SouthernCarolina Alliance. Alumni of the program serve as leaders in business, healthcare, education, government, and non-profits across the Salkehatchie region.

After nearly five decades of service, Siren announces retirement

After serving the Salkehatchie community for nearly 50 years, Professor Joe Siren has announced his retirement as speech and history instructor for the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie. "USC Salkehatchie and Allendale couldn't be more grateful for the time Joe Siren has devoted to our campus, our students and our community," Dean April Cone said. "Joe is full of knowledge and wisdom that is simply irreplaceable. He's been a staple on our campus and in our local communities, yet his impact reaches far beyond."

Broomfield named director of Salkehatchie Leadership Institute

Shelby Broomfield has been named director of the Salkehatchie Leadership Institute (SLI).The Salkehatchie Leadership Institute was established to stimulate economic development in Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, Jasper, Beaufort and Hampton counties. As a Barnwell County native, Broomfield understands the needs and challenges the region faces.

"What I do makes a positive difference in the world, even if only for a few people at a time. I can make a difference for patients and families in a moment when they are at their lowest. I feel that it gives my work meaning," Anna says. "I also love getting to know my patients and hearing their stories. It is eye-opening and makes you grateful for the simple things in life."

Dangerfield Presents Research at Oxford

Professor David W. Dangerfield, a historian with the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie, presented research at the British American Nineteenth Century History (BrANCH) Annual Conference 2023. The international meeting of historians was held at the Queens College - Oxford University.

Salkehatchie Hosts S.C. Humanities Council Symposium

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie recently hosted the South Carolina Humanities Council Program: "Just Sharing: Building Community Through Stories of Our Past." The program is part of a series of symposiums that will be held across South Carolina with a focus on enslavement, Reconstruction and civil rights.

Dean participates in Topper Site excavation

USC Salkehatchie Dean April Cone recently participated in a Topper Site excavation, the first at the site in almost 10 years. The Topper Site, which is located around 15 miles from USC Salkehatchie's Allendale campus on the Savannah River, is significant in that artifacts excavated from the location seem to indicate human habitation of North America much earlier than previously believed.

To qualify for the President's List, students must earn a 4.0 GPA in all coursework attempted. To qualify for the Dean's list, a student must earn at least a 3.5 GPA in all coursework attempted.

Dangerfield's lecture examines free people of color from Berkeley County

The Berkeley County Historical Society recently hosted a lecture by Dr. David W. Dangerfield, a professor of history at the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie. Dangerfield's talk, "Shades of Freedom," examined free people of color who lived in what is now Berkeley County during the antebellum era.

Platts Recognized for 40 years of Service to USC Salkehatchie

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie and the Western Carolina Higher Education Commission (WCHEC) recognized Mr. F. Holbrook Platts for 40 years of service to the university, the commission and the Salkehatchie community at its recent commencement ceremony.
