Center for Science Education

The Center for Science Education provides courses and professional development to current and future K-12 science teachers to enhance the quality of science instruction in South Carolina. Current programs serve more than 100 teachers per year, and we are in the process of expanding our course offerings.

On-Line Contest

The SC Academy of Science On-Line Contest was open from January to March 6, 2023, receiving 247 entries from grades 4-8. The contests covered various topics, including biology, Earth's atmosphere, barcodes, and measurement. Students answered 60 multiple-choice questions, some requiring hands-on activities, following South Carolina's Common Core Guidelines.

Governor's Award

The award was established in 1985 by the Drug Science Foundation to honor specifically an individual or team within the state whose achievements and contributions to science in South Carolina merit special recognition and to promote wider awareness of the quality and extent of scientific activity in South Carolina. Since 1989 the award has been under the joint sponsorship of the Governor’s office and South Carolina Academy of Science.

Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS)

The DOD SC Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS) are funded by the Department of Defense and take place every January at the Russell House on the USC campus. The main purpose of the Symposia is to provide an opportunity for high school students to present their research.

Middle & Elementary School Academy of Science (MESAS)

The Middle and Elementary School Academy of Science is sponsored by the South Carolina Academy to communicate science and mathematics through a variety of activities. 

Metric Week

Every year during the week of  October 10th Metric Week is observed. Metric system activities during and after Metric Week cultivate a curiosity and understanding . More information can be found here.

South Carolina Academy of Sciences (SCAS)

The Academy exists to promote the advancement and constructive use of science in South Carolina.

Science and Engineering Fair

The Center for Science Education at University of South Carolina is the host of the Region II Science and Engineering Fair,  a yearly, regional fair. It is open to students from 4th to 12th grades from the following counties in South Carolina: Calhoun, Clarendon, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg, Richland, and Sumter.
