Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures

The Spanish Program at UofSC is the largest in South Carolina. It offers a wide variety of courses for undergraduate and graduate students. The Spanish program is led by a diverse group of faculty dedicated to the teaching and research of the Spanish language and the varied cultures of Latin America and Spain.

¡Bienvenidos, Welcome!

Undergraduate students can enroll in a variety of Spanish courses to pursue our  BA Concentration in Spanish, or earn a Spanish Minor to complement work in their chosen field. Learning Spanish and developing intercultural communication skills to engage with Spanish-speaking populations opens doors to a variety of careers and professions. The cultural knowledge of the diverse communities of the Spanish-speaking world taught in the Spanish Program prepares students to be active participants in today’s global society.

In addition to the B.A. Concentration in Spanish, our program also offers a M.A. and Ph.D. in literary and cultural studies, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching.

In addition to these graduate programs, students can also earn an Undergraduate Teaching Certification which is recognized by the State Department of Education and allows them to be placed as a Spanish teacher in the public school system upon graduation.

Those pursuing a PhD in Spanish at the University of South Carolina work with our faculty who conduct research on varied themes in literary and cultural studies in Latin America and Spain. Graduate Assistantships are also awarded based upon merit, to support their research.

The Graduate faculty in Spanish are well recognized in their fields of specialization and have published extensively in literary and cultural studies, film and visual culture, linguistics, pedagogy, and other topics in Spain and Latin America.  They regularly collaborate with other programs such as LASP, Linguistics, Comparative Literature and Women’s and Gender’s studies, directing dissertations, teaching cross-listed courses and participating in study groups and regional, national and international conferences.

In addition to its strong emphasis on scholarship, its faculty and students have made a solid commitment to the community, establishing work links with non-profit organizations and supporting the Latino Community of South Carolina.

The Spanish Program also sponsors a faculty-led summer study abroad programs in Spain (Summer I), and Spanish Program faculty teach courses for direct SPAN credit on programs led by the Education Abroad Office in Peru (winter), Costa Rica (Maymester), and Galápagos, Ecuador (Maymester).
