From 2010-2012, WWBI collaborated with Congaree Elementary to provide an after-school program for 2nd-5th grade girls. Graduate and undergraduate students developed a curriculum and facilitated a series of workshops each semester. The curriculum built upon issues and concerns that surfaced from the girls’ environments and popular culture. The program was designed to engage students in dialogue about these issues and to promote self-esteem and healthy body image through the use of creative writing and art. The girls used mixed media art practice to respond to visual representations of gender, social interactions, personal limits, and more.
