Our students make a difference in the community through internships that have a Women's and Gender Studies focus in areas like girls' empowerment, legislative advocacy, refugee assistance, and reproductive health.
The Department of Women's and Gender Studies offers a 3-credit hour Community Service Internship course that is available to majors and non-majors. During the semester, students complete an internship in the community and reflect on their service in class.
Internship Contract
Before enrolling in the course, students work with the Internship Coordinator to identify
a community organization and internship supervisor to work with. Following the initial
outreach to the community organization, students must get a commitment letter from their organizational supervisor. Then students must obtain signatures on a
copy of this form from their advisor, department head, and Dean’s office (email to
Dawn Hiller - hiller@sc.edu). Dawn Hiller will then send the signed form to the registrar. After the form has
been received and approved by the registrar, students may register for the course.
Students should complete this process at least four weeks before the course begins. We have created a downloadable and printable overview of the WGST 499 internship selection and registration process, which includes due
dates and links. All students should download and print this overview and follow the
instructions carefully.
Community Organizations
The Department of Women's and Gender Studies has partnerships with multiple organizations
throughout the community. Students may explore opportunities with these partners or
consult with the Internship Coordinator about organizations that are non-partnered.
