Ask me about...

Undergraduate research, USC’s radio station and the Top Scholars Program!

Hi, my name is Hannah! I am currently involved in environmental chemistry research, and after I graduate, I want to get my Ph.D. in environmental chemistry and toxicology by looking at contaminants in our environment and how they can affect our health. After that, I want to become a chemistry professor!

  • Hometown: Spartanburg, SC
  • Major/Minor(s): Chemistry | Environmental and Sustainable Engineering; Neuroscience
  • Year: Class of 2027

Why I chose the South Carolina Honors College

During my college application process, I was very unsure of what I wanted. However, when I attended an Honors College Info Session, I could see that the students and staff at USC would support me and help me figure out what I wanted. I realized that at the Honors College I could do almost anything with the resources that they and USC have to offer.

My advice for prospective students: Consider what’s important to you. Is it research? Diversity? Prestige? Narrowing down the size, location, opportunities, culture etc. of the school you want will help you make your decision. And no matter where you end up, you can make the most of your four years!

Something I’m proud of that’s not on my resume: My dedication to learning about and sharing the story of Jews during the Holocaust. Ever since reading Anne Frank’s diary as a young Jewish girl myself, I have taken multiple tours at our Anne Frank Center at USC, visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam and am now taking the Honors course Engaging in the Legacies of Anne Frank (in which I will become a tour guide at the center) in my commitment to learning and teaching about her story.

Favorite question during an information session: Do you recommend living in the Honors Residence Hall?

YES, and for many reasons. For one, you get amazing perks such as a dining hall, cafe, gaming room and classrooms all just on the first floor of the residence hall. You also are about a five minute walk to most places on campus. But most importantly, the Honors dorm provides a community that is incredibly important for first-years. Living in a residence hall with residents that shares similar academic, social and professional interests as you is an invaluable experience.

Quick Facts

My clubs and organizations: Outside of Honors Ambassadors, I have been part of USC’s student-led radio station WUSC since my first semester on campus, and now I am both the training director and a DJ. I am also the secretary for USC's American Chemical Society student chapter, and I am part of the Stamps/Top Scholars communities.
Favorite place for lunch on or near campus: Cool Beans Coffee Company. While I don't like coffee, their hot chocolate and croissants are amazing.
Theme song of my life: Running Out Of Time by Paramore. This song perfectly conveys the feeling of wanting to do so much but not being able to for a variety of reasons, and that's ok.
Skill I’d like to master: I definitely would love to master nail art. I got started during Covid and while I have a lot of fun with it, I’m not very good…
Something new I’d like to learn: I am currently trying to "collect" a wide variety of STEM research skills. This summer, I learned cell culture and q-PCR, and right now I'm working on learning Python!
