Why I chose the South Carolina Honors College

I knew that I wanted to go to a big school after going to a small high school, but I was scared of not finding my people or finding a community that supported me. When I came to the Honors Admitted Students Day, I could tell that everyone there truly cared about who I was and what I wanted to do in my life. They showed that they wanted to not only help me succeed, but to excel.

My advice for prospective students: Be your authentic and true self in the Honors College application essays. The readers want to learn about who you are as a person and how you would fit with this college.

Favorite question during an information session: If I swam in high school but hated it, should I still try club swim?

Absolutely! I swam throughout my life and by the time I was graduating, I told myself I would never swim again. I was convinced to give the club swim team a week trial run and I absolutely fell in love with it. I’ve met my very best friends though this organization, fallen back in love with swimming, and served as Philanthropy chair and now Vice President.

Favorite Honors class: “Heroes and Villains of Ancient Greece and Rome.” The professor was so knowledgeable about every single topic we covered, that we could ask him the most niche questions and he would have an answer. He would assign a reading the night before class about an ancient ruler, and once we got to class he would have us debate prominent rulings that we had read about and if we were in favor or not. It allowed for fun and exciting discussions, so I was never bored.
