Background
Dean and Professor Teri Browne joined the faculty in 2008, where she was also co-director
of Interprofessional Education for the Health Sciences until 2021. In 2017, Browne
was inducted as a Society for Social Work and Research Fellow for her work to advance
the mission of the society. In 2019 she was chosen as a Distinguished Scholar Fellow
in the Social Work Academy of the National Academies of Practice. Prior to joining
the University of South Carolina, Browne worked as a dialysis social worker for 13
years in New York, California and Illinois.
Browne is and has been a principal or co-investigator on multiple externally-funded
research awards. This includes serving as Co-Principal Investigator for two studies
on kidney disease treatment and transplant access funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes
Research Institute and the NIH.
Browne’s publications focus on nephrology (kidney disease), health social work, integrated
behavioral health, rural health and interprofessional education. She is also the co-editor
of the Handbook of Health Social Work.
Browne was a Competency Chair for the Council on Social Work Education Specialized
Practice Curricular Guide for Health Social Work, a national task force Invited Member
on the American Society of Nephrology Health Care Justice Committee Member and an
Invited Member on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Practitioner Level
Measurement of Effective Access to Kidney Transplantation Technical Expert Panel.
She is also editor-in-chief of the Journal of Nephrology Social Work since 2015. Browne
received her Master of Social Work from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
She earned her Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago’s School of Social
Service Administration.
