Social work is a profession that strives to improve social conditions, eliminate disparities, and create positive change through advocacy, research and evidence-based strategies. Some of the competencies of social work include:
- Integrating and applying social work knowledge, values and skills in a purposeful and professional manner to promote human and community well-being.
- Understanding ethical decision-making and applying principles to practice, research and policy.
- Engaging with clients by applying the knowledge of human behavior and the social environment.
- The Council on Social Work Education provides more information about social work.
A career in social work is both challenging and rewarding. The profession continues to grow at an increasing rate with state, national and international opportunities. The College of Social Work at Carolina prepares generalist social work leaders through experiential and engaged learning, service learning and opportunities for graduation with leadership distinction.
Upon acceptance into the University of South Carolina, students should declare social work as their major. Admission into the social work lower division does not guarantee progression into the upper division
